Roadside History
The Cholame Y · Highway 46 & Highway 41 · September 30, 1955
At about 5:45 in the afternoon on September 30, 1955, James Dean was driving west along what was then Highway 466 – today's Route 46 – on his way to a sports car race in Salinas. Near the fork locals call the Cholame Y, a car turning left onto Highway 41 crossed his path. He was twenty-four.
In 1977 Seita Ohnishi, a businessman from Kobe who had been moved by East of Eden, paid for a memorial to be built beside the cafe: a band of stainless steel wrapped around a tree of heaven, set in a garden of stones carried from Japan and polished by hand. It was designed to read as unfinished – as his life was.
On the fiftieth anniversary, in 2005, California named the crossroads the James Dean Memorial Junction. Travellers have been pulling in ever since – for the monument, and for a plate of something hot before the road carries on.
